This is a 19th century Oak Tantalus with six decanters and two cordials.
This is a 19th century Oak Tantalus with six decanters and two cordials. This is the type of decanter set that belongs in a cozy library with lots of old leather-bound books on the shelves and a roaring fire in the fireplace. All the glass is handblown with pontils on the bottom of the rounded shoulder decanters. The decanters and stoppers are all decorated with flowers and foliage in gold gilt. The two cordials are also painted with the same decoration. The box is beautifully patinated oak and brass with hand- made nails. The inside is lined with a blue and white paper that is unfortunately coming off here and there. There is a space for each decanter and two slots in the top of the box where the two cordials slide in.
At some point in time someone obviously couldn't wait for the key (I swear it wasn't me!) because the top part of the lock is missing and there is no key. There is one stopper with a chip on the bottom of it which is shown in the photographs. Any wear to this piece only adds to it's character! It is all fabulous! All measurements are below:
The Box:
11"L 7.5"H 5.25"D
The Decanters: Approximately 6-6.5" H 3"W 2.5"D
